Iron Saturation Calculator

Formula

To calculate Iron Saturation (IS):

\[ IS = \left(\frac{SI}{TIBC}\right) \times 100 \]

Where:

What is Iron Saturation?

Iron saturation, also known as transferrin saturation, is a medical test that measures the percentage of iron bound to transferrin, a protein that carries iron in the blood. This test is used to diagnose iron deficiency or iron overload disorders, such as anemia or hemochromatosis. A low iron saturation indicates iron deficiency, while a high iron saturation indicates iron overload.

Example Calculations

Example 1:

Assume the following values:

Using the formula:

\[ IS = \left(\frac{80}{300}\right) \times 100 \approx 26.67 \% \]

The Iron Saturation is approximately 26.67%.

Example 2:

Assume the following values:

Using the formula:

\[ IS = \left(\frac{120}{250}\right) \times 100 \approx 48.00 \% \]

The Iron Saturation is approximately 48.00%.
