What is Thermal Efficiency?

Thermal efficiency is the ratio of the work output to the heat input of a heat engine. It measures how efficiently the engine converts heat into mechanical work.

Example Calculation

Let's assume the following values:

Work Output (W): 500 J
Heat Input (Q): 1000 J

Using the formula to calculate the thermal efficiency:

\[ \eta_{th} = \frac{500}{1000} = 0.5 \]

The thermal efficiency is 0.5, or 50%.
