What is a Window to Wall Ratio?

A window to wall ratio is a measure of the amount of window area there is on a building relative to the total amount of exterior wall area. The most efficient window to wall ratios are those of approximately 20% window to wall area.

Example Calculation

Let's assume the following values:

Glazing Window Area (GWA) = 100 ft²
Gross Exterior Wall Area (GEWA) = 500 ft²

Using the formula to calculate the window to wall ratio:

\[ WtWr = \frac{100}{500} = 0.20 \]

The window to wall ratio is 0.20 or 20%.
