Formula

To calculate the Stream Velocity:

\[ SV = \frac{Q}{W \times D} \]

Where:

\(SV\) is the Stream Velocity (ft/s)
\(Q\) is the Volumetric Flow Rate (ft³/s)
\(W\) is the Width of the Stream (ft)
\(D\) is the Depth of the Stream (ft)

What is Stream Velocity?

Stream velocity is a measure of the linear rate of change of distance with respect to the time of a stream or river. It indicates how fast the water is moving in the stream or river.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Volumetric Flow Rate (\(Q\)) = 500 ft³/s
Width of the Stream (\(W\)) = 20 ft
Depth of the Stream (\(D\)) = 10 ft

Using the formula:

\[ SV = \frac{500}{20 \times 10} = 2.50 \text{ ft/s} \]

The Stream Velocity is 2.50 ft/s.

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Volumetric Flow Rate (\(Q\)) = 300 ft³/s
Width of the Stream (\(W\)) = 15 ft
Depth of the Stream (\(D\)) = 8 ft

Using the formula:

\[ SV = \frac{300}{15 \times 8} = 2.50 \text{ ft/s} \]

The Stream Velocity is 2.50 ft/s.
