BJJ Calories Burned Calculator

Calculate Calories Burned

Formula

The formula to estimate the calories burned during a BJJ session is:

\[ \text{Calories Burned} = \left( \frac{\text{MET} \times 3.5 \times \text{Weight in kg}}{200} \right) \times \text{Duration in minutes} \]

Where:

What is MET?

MET stands for Metabolic Equivalent of Task. It is a unit used to estimate the amount of energy expended during physical activities compared to the resting metabolism. A MET value of 1 represents the energy expenditure at rest. Higher MET values indicate greater energy expenditure. For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), a MET value of 4.0 reflects the intensity of the activity.

Example Calculation

Consider an example where:

First, convert the weight to kilograms:

\[ \text{Weight in kg} = 150 \text{ lbs} \times 0.453592 = 68.18 \text{ kg} \]

Next, use the formula to calculate calories burned:

\[ \text{Calories Burned} = \left( \frac{4.0 \times 3.5 \times 68.18}{200} \right) \times 60 = \left( \frac{952.72}{200} \right) \times 60 = 4.7636 \times 60 = 285.76 \text{ kcal} \]

This means approximately 285.76 calories are burned during a 60-minute BJJ session for someone weighing 150 lbs.
