Formula

To calculate the shape factor (\(SF\)):

\[ SF = \frac{P}{\sqrt{A}} \]

Where:

\(SF\) is the shape factor
\(P\) is the perimeter of the contour around the area
\(A\) is the total area

What is a Shape Factor?

A shape factor ratio is a measure of the length of a perimeter relative to the square root of the area that perimeter surrounds. It is used in various fields such as engineering, physics, and geometry to understand the relationship between the shape and size of an object.

Example Calculation 1

Let's assume the following values:

Perimeter (\(P\)) = 40 units
Area (\(A\)) = 100 square units

Using the formula:

\[ SF = \frac{40}{\sqrt{100}} = 4 \]

The shape factor is 4.

Example Calculation 2

Let's assume the following values:

Perimeter (\(P\)) = 60 units
Area (\(A\)) = 225 square units

Using the formula:

\[ SF = \frac{60}{\sqrt{225}} = 4 \]

The shape factor is 4.
