Calculate Average Particle Velocity

Formula

The formula to calculate the average particle velocity (v) is:

\[ \text{v} = \left( \frac{8 \times k \times T}{\pi \times m} \right)^{1/2} \]

Where:

What is Particle Velocity?

Particle velocity, also known as the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, represents the average velocity of gas particles as a whole. Since temperature is the average kinetic energy of a gas, calculating the velocity of any single particle using temperature is impossible. Instead, we calculate the average velocity. The larger the mass, the lower the velocity, and vice versa with regard to temperature. As temperature increases, kinetic energy increases.

Example Calculation

Let's assume the following values:

Using the formula to calculate the average particle velocity (v):

\[ \text{v} = \left( \frac{8 \times 1.3806 \times 10^{-23} \times 300}{\pi \times 4.65 \times 10^{-26}} \right)^{1/2} \approx 476 \text{ m/s} \]

The average particle velocity (v) is approximately 476m/s.
