Formula

To calculate the predicted adult height of a child:

For boys:

\[ \text{Child's Height} = \left( \left( \frac{\text{Mother's Height} \times 12}{13} \right) + \text{Father's Height} \right) / 2 + 2.5 \]

For girls:

\[ \text{Child's Height} = \left( \left( \frac{\text{Father's Height} \times 13}{12} \right) + \text{Mother's Height} \right) / 2 - 2.5 \]

What is Midparental Height?

Midparental height is an estimate of a child’s future adult height based on the average height of the parents, with adjustments made for the child’s gender. This method is commonly used by pediatricians to help predict a child’s growth pattern, although it is not an exact science and individual results can vary due to genetics, nutrition, health, and other factors.

Example Calculation

Let's assume the following values:

Step 1: Calculate the mother's height adjusted for the boy's formula:

\[ \frac{\text{Mother's Height} \times 12}{13} = \frac{65 \times 12}{13} = 60 \]

Step 2: Add the father's height and divide by 2:

\[ \frac{60 + 70}{2} = 65 \]

Step 3: Add 2.5 inches:

\[ 65 + 2.5 = 67.5 \text{ inches} \]
